Annotation 1

Objective 1:  To learn and understand the most major and/or common neurological traumas and ailments, the signs and symptoms that accompany them, and the treatments that can be given to a patient with them.

Activities/Resources:
         - Attending weekly presentations/conferences with my supervisor where new cases are discussed including Monday
conferences, Radiology Grand Rounds, and Tumor Board
         - Reading and referencing neurosurgical handbooks for anatomy, procedures, and terminology, and handouts provided by the
               Neurosurgery team
         - Reviewing charts and scans and observing verbal exams for patients on the Neurosurgery floor
Evidence:
          - Include in my portfolio my assessment of a mock case study of a fictitious patient for which I will assess their state of
neurological health using the education I have obtained during my stay in the neurosurgery department
          - Include in my portfolio a list of commonly used medical terminology frequently referenced in the neurosurgical field

The first of the following pieces of evidence is a PDF file entitled “A Guide to Commonly Used Neurosurgical Terminology”.  Being submersed in an environment where medical jargon is second nature, one begins to not only pick up on but to also understand the language of the medical field.  This file is a compilation of terms and abbreviations used frequently by the Neurosurgery team at Rhode Island Hospital as well as required knowledge for any future medicinally-related education and/or career.  I would write down any expressions used during examinations, reports, etc. and later reference handbooks given to me by my supervisor and the team to determine what the expressions meant alone and in the context in which they were spoken.

The next example of evidence is a document that served as a final assessment of my performance during the four-week rotation with the Neurosurgery team.  Using the information illustrated in the previous evidential data as well as my experience over the four weeks, I was able to assess the report of a mock patient’s symptoms, lab results, and physical exam to determine any immediate concerns, how to begin to proceed with treatment, and how to avoid any related complications.

Both of the afore discussed and exhibited pieces of evidence demonstrate my abilities not only as a recent Neurosurgery intern but also as a past, present, and future student.  I could relate a lot of the terms and anatomy I encountered to past Anatomy and Physiology classes.  The Terminology Guide I created and the mock case study I completed illustrate my ability to absorb and retain information and moreover, to do so in a prompt fashion.  The final examination in particular confirms my capacity to focus on elemental yet essential evidence to create an overall evaluation of a situation.  This skill is applicable to many aspects of life but most importantly, it is a necessary skill to succeed as a Nurse Practitioner.
